What is Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed to provide health coverage for individuals younger than 65 with disabilities, individuals who are 65 or older, and individuals who have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

There are multiple parts of Medicare that each cover specific services.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare, known as Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), provides coverage for inpatient and outpatient services. With Part A, you can expect to receive coverage for inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, home healthcare, and hospice care.

Part B covers outpatient services, preventive services, and medical supplies.

Medicare Supplements

Medicare Supplement Plans provide extra coverage for services that Original Medicare does not cover. There are ten supplement plans: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Each plan covers a certain amount of coinsurance, copayments, deductibles, and excess charges.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Part C, commonly referred to as Medicare Advantage, offers the same benefits as Original Medicare, except coverage for hospice care. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer additional benefits not covered by Original Medicare, such as coverage for dental, vision, and hearing exams.

Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs. Part D can be bought as a standalone plan when enrolled in Original Medicare, or it can be offered as an additional benefit through a Medicare Advantage Plan.
