Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is one of the parts that make up Original Medicare. Part B covers medical insurance and outpatient services.

Part B Coverage

There are multiple services covered under Part B:

  • Preventive services: Part B covers preventive services, which is healthcare used to prevent an illness or detect in its early stages.
  • Medically necessary services: This includes services or items needed to treat or diagnose a medical condition.
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME): Only a doctor can prescribe DME, which is medical equipment that can withstand multiple uses, are used for medical reasons, used inside the home, and have an expected lifetime of three years.  
  • Outpatient prescription drugs: Part B only covers a limited amount of outpatient drugs, including antigens, select anticancer, immunosuppressants, injectable osteoporosis drugs, and drugs used with an item of DME, such as an infusion pump.
  • Ambulance services: Ground ambulance transportation is covered. Emergency ambulance transportation in an airplane or helicopter may be covered if you need immediate transportation and cannot be taken by ground transportation.
  • Mental health services: Part B will help cover outpatient mental health services, including family counseling, psychiatric evaluation, diagnostic tests, partial hospitalization, and a yearly depression screening.

Eligibility for Part B

If you are eligible for premium-free Part A, then you are eligible for Part B.

To be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare, you must:

  • Receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits
  • You are younger than 65 with a disability and receive disability benefits
  • You have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

If you are not eligible for premium-free Part A, you can become eligible for Part B by meeting these requirements:

  • You are 65 or older
  • You are a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of at least five years

Part B Costs

Unlike Part A, you cannot be premium-free with Part B. The monthly premium for Part B is determined by your income. In 2020, if your yearly income is $87,000 or less, your monthly premium payment will be $144.60. Your payment could be higher if you exceed this amount.

You will also have to pay a deductible and excess charges for Part B.
