Medicare Part A
Medicare Part A is one of the parts that make up Original Medicare. Part A covers hospital insurance and inpatient care.
Part A Coverage
There are multiple services covered under Part A:
- Inpatient hospital stays: You receive 60 lifetime reserve days and will be covered up to 90 days for each benefit period if you are an inpatient in a general hospital. It also covers up to 190 lifetime days when in a psychiatric hospital that is Medicare-certified.
- Skilled nursing facility care: Medicare covers room, board, medications, tube feedings, and wound care, and will cover up to 100 days for each benefit period.
- Nursing home care: This is covered as long as your stay is not long-term or custodial.
- Home healthcare: This is covered if you have spent no less than three days as an inpatient within two weeks of receiving home care.
- Hospice care: This is covered only if your provider says it is necessary.

Eligibility for Part A
To be eligible for Part A, you must be 65 or older, have a disability, or have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). You must also be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of at least five years.
For many, Part A is premium-free. To be eligible for premium-free Part A, you must meet certain criteria:
- You are 65 or older
- You or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for ten years or more
- You receive or are eligible for Social Security retirement benefits
- You receive or are eligible for Railroad Retirement Board benefits
To be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare, you must:
- Receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits
- You are younger than 65 with a disability and receive disability benefits
- You have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
